Hi! My name is Maylea Salmon, and I’m currently serving as the Photographic Services Intern for the Indianapolis Colts!
In this role, I capture a wide range of imagery—from practices and community events to studio headshots, promotional content, and full game day coverage. This hands-on experience has sharpened my technical skills, strengthened my eye for storytelling, and deepened my passion for sports photography. The storytelling and emotional aspect that is involved in sports photography is the reason I love it ! I am highly motivated, communicative, and hardworking in all that I do!
I am a 2025 graduate of the University of Cincinnati's journaism department on a photo journalism and sports marketing specific track. During my time at UC I worked as a Photography Intern for our athletic department and the chief photographer for our student news paper, The News Record.
Why did I choose sports photography?
Ever since elementary school, I was the only girl that played football on the blacktop or baseball in the grass area at recess with the boys in my class. I was the only girl that waited endlessly on the sidelines till the one  boy let me go in for a play. I was the girl that put “NFL player” on the PowerPoint slide show at kindergarten graduation when the dream job question appeared. I have loved sports, football in particular since I was that little girl in oversized basketball shorts, my Colts T-shirt, and basketball shoes on the blacktop just waiting for the boys to let me play. Working in sports has been my dream for as long as I can remember. I see the emotion it brought out in me, the fans, and through my lens I am working to see and capture the emotions it brings to the players as well. The emotional aspect of all sports is the reason I love what I do, but the personal connection and emotion I feel relating to sports is what leads me to continue in photography, working toward the same goal I had in Kindergarten.
The University of Cincinnati interviewed me and wrote an article about the work I’ve done around campus, including with the student newspaper, the athletic department, and Champion. It was such an honor to be featured and to have the opportunity to share my story!
